How Does DWN Work?
As a member led coalition, the primary work of DWN is done through its three member committees: Public Awareness, Advocacy, and Network Building. Numerous projects are housed within each of these committees.
Network Building
The Network Building Committee’s goal is to empower a diverse membership through member support and outreach to new members. Members work together through small group task forces focusing on membership development and outreach, member communication and coordination, grassroots organizing and regional networking, and mapping the detention system. The committee also helps guide the planning for the DWN national conference.
Public Awareness
The Public Awareness Committee’s goal is to positively influence public opinion about immigration detention and deportation issues. Members work through subcommittees that focus on 1) expanding and enhancing the network's media work, 2) researching and compiling data on detention, 3) developing public education materials and the story project, and 4) identifying new uses for emerging technologies.
Advocacy
The Advocacy Committee’s goal is to provide forums, support, and coordination for members’ advocacy. The network as an entity does not take specific advocacy positions but instead facilitates this work for the members. Together members share their advocacy strategies and collaborate on advocacy opportunities (policy analysis, sign-on letters, Hill visits, congressional briefings, etc.). This work is essential in bringing the perspectives of members from around the country to bear on the policies affecting immigrants being developed in the Capital. Members can get involved in the Action Alert, Legislative Analysis, Congressional Education or Administrative Advocacy Teams as well as substantive teams focusing on Alternatives to Detention or Conditions and Standards in Detention.
DWN’s Steering Committee provides overall guidance and governance to the network to ensure its sustainability and effectiveness. An ad hoc Quick Response Team helps DWN respond promptly to immediate advocacy or media opportunities.
