How Can I Use Human Rights to Help Immigration Detainees?

International human rights standards and national human rights laws are seen as essential to the observance of human rights. It is important that both States and its people be vigilant about the dangers of human rights abuse and that individuals should know about their rights and the rights of others. They should be able to use international and national law as well as the legal system and national human rights institutions to ensure that the promise of human rights protection is realized.

  • If you are a detainee representing yourself, mention specific human rights provisions in addition to the U.S. laws that you cite in your application for relief or your request for release.

  • If you are a detainee or a family member working with a lawyer on your representation, ask your lawyer to consider including human rights provisions in any application for relief in addition to any U.S. laws.

  • If you are working to make detention conditions better by writing a letter to Congress or your local newspaper on detention or talking about detention to your City Council or your church group, include specific human rights provisions in your writings/talks.
