Washington, DC – In response to recent reporting in The Atlantic that Donald Trump and Stephen Miller are formulating plans to deploy the National Guard to deport millions of immigrants, Silky Shah, Executive Director of Detention Watch Network issued the following statement:
“We know there is no end to how far Donald Trump, Stephen Miller and the right-wing ideologues that enable them will go to target and dehumanize immigrants. This most recent plan would have dire consequences for immigrants and our democracy. Whether or not it becomes a reality, it is clear that the far-right is laying the groundwork for unprecedented anti-immigrant policies, and emboldening their base to normalize violence and racism and silence any dissent of their agenda.
Rather than fighting back against this dangerous and immoral path, President Biden and the Democrats continue to bargain with immigrant lives and cosign the far-right’s cruel, anti-immigrant agenda. Especially in light of Trump’s latest plan, as advocates, we are calling on President Biden, the Democrats, and the media at large to stop enabling Trump and the far-right’s agenda by selling out immigrant lives. The Biden administration has surrendered the narrative to the right and what we need now more than ever is a counter to the Trump and Miller playbook and a decisive and robust affirmation of the rights of all immigrants.”
