Washington, DC — In response to the Trump administration’s executive order reinstating the Muslim ban, Setareh Ghandehari, Advocacy Director at Detention Watch Network issued the following statement:
“We denounce Trump’s white supremacist policy to reinstate and expand the racist Muslim and African ban. With new entry bans and restrictions on 19 countries, of which many are Muslim-majority, African, Asian, and Caribbean nations, the Trump administration is once again using national security as a pretext for villainizing Black and brown people. The ban is the latest in an onslaught of intentional and methodical actions designed to cause chaos, sow confusion, separate loved ones, destabilize communities and hinder opportunity. Moreso, the ban will force vulnerable people to abandon their right to seek safety – putting people in harmful and potentially deadly conditions.
These cruel policies further isolate the US from the rest of the world -- they are a part of the Trump administration’s unrelenting pursuit of demonizing migrants and immigrants, completely disregarding people's well-being and humanity. The racist and xenophobic compulsion driving the administration’s mass detention and deportation agenda continues to be laid bare, as the United States dangerously plunges further into the throws of Trump’s authoritarian regime.”
