Washington, DC — In response to the Roberts Court’s decisions terminating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian and Syrian refugees, and blocking migrants from seeking asylum at the US border, Setareh Ghandehari, Advocacy Director at Detention Watch Network, said:

“Today, the right wing Justices on the Supreme Court doubled down on Trump’s cruel and racist anti-immigrant agenda with two decisions that will put countless people at risk of detention and deportation.The decisions, stripping away critical Temporary Protected Status from community members and delaying or outright denying people’s right to seek asylum will impact people seeking safety from life-threatening crises, including, war, armed conflicts, climate disasters, and more.

The decision strips the TPS status of people from Haiti and Syria immediately and could put over one million  people at risk of ICE targeting, abusive immigrant detention, and deportation – which can be a death sentence. We vehemently denounce the Roberts Court’s abandonment of families, including for those who call the U.S. home, many for decades or even since childhood and those seeking safety in this country.

People impacted by these cruel and heartless decisions are our family members, neighbors and friends — beloved contributors to communities across the country that are now subject to Trump’s mass detention and deportation agenda. We call for the safety and dignity of all people living here, regardless of immigration status.”
