Qualified Charitable Distributions /Giving through your IRA

Federal law allows people age 70½ or older to make direct transfers to charitable organizations (up to $108,000 per year, per person) from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA), without the withdrawal being treated as taxable income. The withdrawal can be counted toward your “Required Minimum Distribution.”

Contact your IRA custodian and follow their procedures to request a “Qualified Charitable Distribution.”

Please provide the recipient information below to your custodian, along with our tax ID: 83-3874583. Please direct your check, drawn from your IRA account and made payable to the Detention Watch Network, to:

Detention Watch Network
1730 Rhode Island Ave NW, Suite 711
Washington, DC 20036

The check must be accompanied by your name and address information for you to receive a written acknowledgement from DWN. Please notify us at info@detentionwatchnetwork.org when your gift is on the way and provide the following information:

  • Gift amount
  • Your name and address
  • Name of the financial institution sending your gift

Tax Implications:

Federal: The transfer is not recognized as a taxable withdrawal from your IRA, and does not afford you an income tax charitable deduction.

State: Tax laws vary by state. Please contact a tax professional for more information.

Employer Matching Gift Programs

There are thousands of corporate employers in the U.S. that offer “matching gift programs” for their employees! This means that when an employee donates to a nonprofit, they can request a matching gift from their employer. The employer then donates to the same nonprofit. Companies typically match donations at a 1:1 ratio, but some will match at a 2:1, 3:1, or even a 4:1 ratio.

Find out if your company offers a matching gift program by using the search form below!
